“Hey anyone can change a WordPress website theme !”

How to Change a WordPress Website Theme in 6 Steps

Jill’s feeling great. Her designer got her new WordPress website up and running a few months ago.  Now she has found what looks like a great new WordPress theme.  All the members of her business group are raving about it.

Jill called up her web guy but he is tied up and she knows from experience it might be days ( or weeks) before he gets back to her.

She really wants to try out that new theme right now! But she’s just gotten used to writing blog posts. She’s afraid she just doesn’t have the web skills for the job.

Well  if you are like Jill and a lot of  other small people, you are probably interested in using a WordPress website to promote yourself online.

And at first you were probably all excited because you realized you could finally start moving ahead with your online marketing without waiting for some slow poke webmaster – until now.

This is Why WordPress Sites are Great for Non-Technical People

One the things that some people don’t like about WordPress websites is that they can seem too cookie-cutter looking because of their reliance on themes (templates).

But having a standard coded theme also makes WordPress, easy to work with and easy for search engines like Google to scan and index.

With the use of website customizations and/or the use of premium themes – just about anyone can create a professional business site that doesn’t look just like all the other websites in your area.

Check out these different “looks” I created for client’s site.  I used the same WordPress account, and even the same theme.  I just used the theme options to customize the header, colors and sidebar.

Two different looks from the same software. And while I did have know some coding, the bulk of the work was just switching things around in WordPress and letting it do all the heavy lifting.

Now I want to show you how simple it is to switch themes (or change the look and appearance of a WordPress site) here is an excerpt from my how to create your own WordPress website course, “Get Up & Running Fast”

How to Change a Theme on a WordPress Website

“To change a theme, you must go the “Appearance >> Theme” tab in the WP Dashboard sidebar. The only theme you should see is the default “Twenty Fourteen” theme.

At the top left above the theme image/info module, you will see the “Add New” button.

Click to open. You can use the Search, the Upload* or the Feature Filter options to locate the Theme you want to use.

*NOTE: if you have purchased a premium theme, you would use the Upload function to install it. A good theme developer will have a detailed set of instructions on how to install and setup their theme.

To install Twenty Twelve theme, type in the name “twenty twelve” (no quotes), then click the search button.  You can put the name of any theme you would like here.

You will be shown your Search Results. Select and click the Install Now button below the screenshot of the Twenty Twelve theme.

Now you should see your new theme installed.  You can start customizing it by clicking the blue Customize button.

Don’t delete the other theme. If your current theme crashes WP will automatically move to the next one. If you don’t have a theme – your site will do down completely! ”

Now that was a fairly simple example of why I think WordPress is the best website building tool for most businesses.

It’s easy to update even for non-technical people with no web skills.
